The delegation of Nazarbayev University visited laboratory centers of "Research Institute of mining and drilling technology KazMunayGaz" in the cities of Atyrau and Aktau

On June 12-14, 2017, the delegation of Nazarbayev University represented by professors of the School of Science and Technology Zhandos Utegulov and Phan Khayan, the Mining School and the Earth Sciences Gani Nesipbekov and Nasser Madani, as well as the Director of the Research Support Office Dinara Berdyhanova visited laboratory centers LLP "Research Institute of mining and drilling technology" KazMunayGaz, located in the cities of Atyrau and Aktau.

During the visit there was a discussion on research projects that can be implemented on the basis of Research Institute of Production and Drilling Technology KazMunayGas.

Based on the results of the first project, it is planned to develop a remote laser-optical sensor to determine the properties of oil. The proposed research and development will be conducted by Professor Zhandos Utegulov, Laboratory of Laser Materials Science Nazarbayev University (School of Science and Technology). The following project proposes a new methodology for modeling facies domains in oil reservoirs for the transfer of complex contact bonds. Research and modeling will be conducted by Professor Nasser Madani (School of Mining & Geosciences). The third project, "Synthesis, characterization and application of ferrofluids in the process of drilling oil wells" will help to take advantage of nanotechnology to solve problems arising during drilling and refining of oil. This project was proposed by Professor Hyan Fang (School of Science and Technology).

Portfolio companies of Samruk-Kazyna JSC and Nazarbayev University sign roadmaps for the creation of research laboratories.

The portfolio companies of Samruk-Kazyna JSC (“the Fund”) - Tau-Ken Samruk JSC, Samruk-Energy JSC and United Chemical Company LLP -have signed roadmaps with Nazarbayev University (“University”) for the creation of chemical, petrochemical and geological research laboratories.

Under the roadmaps, it is planned to carry out a range of works to build and equip hands-on research and production centers on the basis of the university. This initiative is being implemented by the Fund in accordance with the President's instructions.

It is expected that under the signed roadmaps the first laboratories for certification of agrochemical products in accordance with international standards will be launched in autumn of this year. In addition, catalytic research laboratory in the field of oil refining will be set up on the basis of the University by the end of 2017. The pilot tests within the entire technological chain from enrichment to metallurgy will be carried out on the premises of these centers.

In addition, the Fund plans to expand further cooperation with the University. New roadmaps for the creation of research laboratories in the oil and gas and energy sectors are planned to be signed between the University and the profile portfolio companies of the Fund until the end of 2017.

Within a framework of the USAID project “Satellite enhanced snowmelt flood and drought predictions for Kabul River basin with surface and groundwater modeling” NURIS Research Support Office Grants coordinator took part in a PEER financial training, which was held on 10-11th of April 2017 in Almaty.

This event was organized by the National Academy of Science, USA. The main goal of the event was training with all procedures and rules related to all USAID PEER projects. Representatives from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Usbekistan attended this event.

On April 13th NURIS PI held a meeting between the company RoboCV and professors of the Nazarbayev University. RoboCV is a young and very dynamic company with mission of creating autonomous mobile robotic systems. Nazarbayev University Research and Innovation System and National Academy of Science signed an agreement in March 2017 for the realization of USAID project “Satellite enhanced snowmelt flood and drought predictions for Kabul River basin with surface and groundwater modeling”. This is a Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Afghanistan joint project. The overall objectives of this research are to develop the Kabul river basin flood prediction models using NASA satellite observations that capture the magnitude, timing, and spatial distribution of watershed scale snowmelt parameters and also provide with combined surface and ground water modeling and prediction analyses.

Сombination of the satellite and field data with combined surface and groundwater modeling will help to identify additional water sources within the for Kabul city area for the local residents. In addition, this project will create a good relationship and research cooperation among scientists from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Kazakhstan, young researchers and water experts will be activity involved in this project.

Project implementation period: March 2017-March 2020 Research Support Office is an administrator of this project and assists in its implementation.
